Radiated decorations were common during the 2nd century BC which represented the symbol of the eight-pointed star. There are evicendes of such decorations on shields represented in coins such as the Denarius of T. Deidus (113-112 BC) and  the Denarius of Q. Minucius Thermus (103 BC.).

Also documented in the 4th century BD in the region of Campania. It appears in two shields painted on a fresco on a tomb from Paestum, 4th century. BC. It is believed that the Roman shields had this type of decoration at least from the 3rd century BC.
